A special tree for Fitzalan Wood

As many members of Chippy Green Gym will know, our former Chairman Richard Averill has had to step down from the position due to ill-health.  Richard took a leading role in planning a whole new project for the group, to plant new woodland on a small area of Chipping Norton’s common land or “Regulated Pasture” traditionally known as The Triangle, where hundreds of young trees now form what is known as Fitzalan Wood, a name commemorating the landowner who gave the land to the town in the Middle Ages.

The Committee recently agreed to plant a tree of Richard’s choice at the Wood in recognition of his role in its creation, and he chose a walnut tree. Weather permitting, the planting of a tree of the Broadview variety will take place during the work session on February 13th. Broadview normally starts cropping in three to four years.
